Fury Gives Joshua a 'Final Payday' and Plans to Fight On
Tyson Fury says Anthony Joshua is getting a "final payday" when the two meet on December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Fury added that he has no plans to stop boxing after the fight.
The two British heavyweights have each held world titles, but they have never fought each other in a title unification. Speaking from his training camp, Fury said he never believed the bout would happen. "I didn't think he had the minerals to get in there with the GK and he didn't," Fury said, claiming Joshua turned the fight down four or five times.
"At the end of his career now he wants a final payday. I'll give it to him, no problem."
An "end of an era"
Fury described what he expects fans to see. "They'll see legendary fighters throwing down in their late 30s like all the greats did before," he said. He said fans will see "an end of an era" and noted that he comes from the class of 2008, an Olympic year for amateurs. In his words, the fight has been building for a very long time.
Sky Sports has asked Joshua's promoter, Matchroom Boxing, for comment.
What comes next
Fury is 38 and is heading toward his fortieth professional fight. He said he has two fights left on his current contract. "I'll finish the contract off and then probably sign another 10-fight deal," he said, adding that any new deal depends on the money and would need to come quickly because he is getting older.
His stated target is a trilogy fight with Oleksandr Usyk. Fury still disputes the decision that went against him in the second meeting. "Usyk knows he can't get any money anywhere else," he said, and added that anyone who wants to get paid has to come and see him in the heavyweight division.
Fury also ranked himself as the best heavyweight to ever put on gloves. "There's never been anybody like me," he said, listing his size of 6'9" and 275 pounds, his ability to box like a middleweight, and his power from either stance. "I'm 38-years-old and I'm still proving all the critics wrong," he said.
