Judah: Mayweather Must See Something in Garcia to Take the Fight

· Boxing

Some people see a possible fight between Floyd Mayweather and Ryan Garcia as little more than a cash grab. Zab Judah, who lost a unanimous decision to Mayweather in 2006, says there must be a strategic reason behind it.

The matchup keeps coming up as an option for Garcia, who won the WBC title by beating Mario Barrios in February. Last month the 28-year-old kept his welterweight belt with a second-round finish of Conor Benn, then called for a unification fight with WBA champion Teofimo Lopez. That one could happen in February.

A fight for next year

Garcia's lawyer and advisor, Guadalupe Valencia, told Ring Magazine's Mike Coppinger that a Mayweather fight is also on the cards for next year. If terms are agreed, it would be Mayweather's first professional outing since 2017. It could only happen if the Hall of Famer agrees to put his 50-0 record on the line.

The age gap between the two is close to two decades, which makes the fight look nonsensical on paper. Judah, speaking to Fight Hub TV, said the 49-year-old might have an ace up his sleeve.

"If he takes on this fight, it's because he knows something. Floyd Mayweather does not just jump in the ring and make stupid, outlandish moves," Judah said.

"All of his moves are strategic; all of his moves are planned out. I don't know what would make him want to tangle with a [28-year-old], being [nearly] 50 years old [himself]. But I feel like, if he does sign the contract, he knows something that we don't know."

Garcia previously trained at the Mayweather Boxing Club. Judah's reasoning is that Mayweather has spotted chinks in the 28-year-old's armour.
