Malott Knocks Out Buckley With a Knee in Edmonton Main Event
Mike Malott won the UFC Edmonton main event in front of the Canadian crowd. The welterweight knocked out Joaquin Buckley in the second round of the UFC Edmonton main event, landing a knee flush on the American's chin and following with a single punch that left him completely out.
The win closed a card in which 12 of the 13 fights ended inside the distance. It is also expected to push Malott into the top 10 of the welterweight division, while Buckley, who came in on a two-fight losing streak, has now lost three in a row.
A close first round, a second-round finish
The opening round was competitive, and neither man did enough to clearly take it. Buckley began taking more risks in the second. With his back near the fence, Malott timed a knee as Buckley came forward and it ended the fight on the spot.
Elsewhere on the main card
In the co-main event, Jasmine Jasudavicius took a unanimous decision over contender Erin Blanchfield in front of her home fans. She won the exchanges on the ground against an opponent known for her grappling, and Blanchfield, who needed a finish in the third round, could not get one.
Mexican lightweight Cristian Pérez made a winning UFC debut, recovering from an early shot by Kyle Nelson before knocking him down and finishing him on the ground in 27 seconds. Mandel Nallo, who lost his first UFC fight, beat Nate Landwehr at home, landing his jab and low kicks before a leg kick and ground strikes ended it in the second round. On the prelims, short-notice debutant Joel Faglier survived two knockdowns from the unbeaten Javad Mahjoub and came back to stop a tired opponent with ground-and-pound in round two.
