Mendez Has Rewatched Gaethje's Win Over Topuria Nine Times
Coach Javier Mendez has now sat through Justin Gaethje's win over Ilia Topuria nine times. Speaking on Submission Radio, he called it his favorite fight to watch and said its constant swings in momentum make it unlike anything else he has seen.
"I've watched that sucker nine times now," Mendez said.
Gaethje took the lightweight title from the previously unbeaten Topuria in the main event of UFC Freedom 250, held at the White House in June. The first round was closely contested. In the second, Topuria came close to finishing Gaethje with body shots and submission attempts, and the American got through it.
A fight that kept turning
Gaethje found success in the next two rounds, although "El Matador" kept having moments of his own. After the fourth round, Topuria's corner stopped the fight, and Gaethje was awarded a technical knockout win.
Mendez said the action moved back and forth from the opening bell to the end. Watching it, he was never sure who would come out on top. He stressed how the momentum repeatedly shifted between Gaethje, nicknamed "The Highlight", and Topuria.
For comparison, he brought up Khabib Nurmagomedov's victory over Conor McGregor. He has watched that one three times.
"This one here, from the beginning till the finish, there's no way in hell you're going to tell me that it was one-sided," Mendez said. "That thing went back and forth from the beginning. Where in the history of MMA, seriously, think about this, when have you seen it back and forth like that? Never."
