Mick Terrill Takes Gustavo Trujillo on Short Notice at BKB 58

· Previews and Predictions

Mick Terrill went to Miami for a relaxed trip with a bit of commentary at BKB 58. He now fights the sport's most dominant heavyweight, Gustavo Trujillo, on August 29 for the heavyweight title.

The change came when he saw that Mark O'Neill had visa problems. Terrill was already leaving for Miami, and he messaged the promotion in the middle of the night, US time, offering to step in. He packed his kit just in case. By the time he flew from Newcastle to Heathrow, he was on the phone with the promotion and got the fight. "We have a saying in our gym. It's anyone, anytime, anywhere," he said.

He had been about six weeks from another fight, so his camp had only just started. "Maybe, I haven't got enough fight prep in us for the fight," Terrill said. "But even if I was 100%, Gustavo is a hard fight."

Studying Trujillo

Trujillo is 8-0 with every win a first-round knockout. Terrill first took notice of him because Trujillo had stopped Lorenzo Hunt, whom Terrill later knocked out himself. He describes Trujillo as good at hypnotizing opponents: "He'll slow the pace down to whatever he wants it and then he picks shots at will." The fast hands are the real danger, he said. "I'm saying his strikes are very fast."

Terrill is a former BKB champion from the square-ring days. Of the belt, he said he gave it up long ago, when it was a different organization. Winning in the Trigon would mean gold in all the bigger arenas of the modern era, but legacy is not what drives him. He wants to reach 100 fights and says he is about four short.

He would also honor an October booking in Newcastle, and he would like to defend the Police Gazette diamond belt against Kamil Sokolowski in the fall.

Money and grandkids

Asked about a bout with UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall for a big UK draw, he said: "If the money was there, I'm in."

At home, Terrill owns a gym and has a quiet routine. He has a new granddaughter, and with three sons and only granddaughters, he has been playing with toy horses and tea sets. After a fight he likes a trip to Beamish Museum, and he is cutting weight to make heavyweight, which he once did not expect. He joked that ice cream, up to a liter a day of Haagen-Dazs strawberry cheesecake, is how he built himself up.
