Reyes Fires Back at Cormier Over Commentary After UFC 333
Dominick Reyes followed his first-round knockout of Azamat Murzakanov at UFC 333 with a long social media post aimed at commentator Daniel Cormier. Reyes won the featured prelim on Saturday at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. He is a two-time challenger for the light heavyweight title.
The criticism came on his flight home to California, where he had time to rewatch the broadcast. "Real talk, who actually likes hearing low-IQ, hater-ass DC?!" Reyes wrote. "I have a long flight. Let's get some truths going!"
He said he was tired of being the nice guy while people disrespect what he has done in the sport. He objected to Cormier calling him "kid" and wrote that Jon Jones did not beat all of the light heavyweights. "He whooped you!" Reyes wrote of Cormier.
Cormier responds
Cormier replied quickly. He told Reyes to chill and said he does not use "kid" in a negative way. "When you do some amazing s--t like you did today, I praise you," Cormier wrote. He added that he also speaks plainly about weaker showings, such as the last fight with Johnny, and that Reyes seemed to have been carrying something for a while. "You can always talk to me," he wrote.
Reyes kept going. He said his name is Dominick and that he heard the commentary on his fight, including the moment when Paul called Cormier out for bias and Cormier laughed. He also said he had never seen Cormier anywhere except around the cage. He was bothered, he wrote, by a lack of research and knowledge on the call. "Your 'expert' commentary sways the opinions of average fans, and that has a profound effect on our lives," Reyes wrote.
He also described what he sees as Cormier's bias toward fighters from the Caucasus region, which he called frustrating as an American fighter.
Cormier tried once more to calm things down. He said Reyes was tripping and that he would find him for a conversation. "I actually like you," Cormier wrote, adding that he told Reyes's team how good he looked and that it may have been his best performance. "But this is insane. Just stop! Seriously."
Reyes was not interested in making peace. "I'm not your buddy, guy," he answered. He said he does not care whether Cormier likes him and only wants unbiased, well-informed color commentary. "I will stop now, but not because you asked me to."
