Serrano to Retire After Jan. 9 Fight With Falzon
Amanda Serrano has set a date for the end of her career. Her promoter, Most Valuable Promotions, announced on Wednesday that she will fight one last time on Jan. 9 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan.
The opponent is Skye Falzon. Serrano will put her unified WBO and WBA featherweight titles on the line.
Serrano is a seven-weight world champion and the only Puerto Rican boxer to hold undisputed status in the four-belt era. Her professional record stands at 50-4.
She is best known for her trilogy with Katie Taylor. The trilogy made history by producing the first women's boxing match to headline Madison Square Garden.
"The Last Walk"
In the press release, Serrano looked back on how far the sport has come. "Boxing has been my life, and I never could have imagined the journey it would take me and my family on," she said.
She recalled the early days, when women's boxing was "fighting for recognition in small theater shows." From there, she said, the road led to headlining Madison Square Garden and reaching millions of fans on the biggest shows.
Serrano thanked promoter Nakisa Bidarian, Jake Paul and MVP for believing in her and in women's boxing. Together, she said, they fought for respect, equal opportunities, fair pay and the choice to compete under the same rules as men.
She added that "there's still more work to do" and that she will keep fighting for the next generation after she hangs up her gloves.
Ending her career at home matters to her. "To close my career at home in Puerto Rico, in front of the people who have supported me from the beginning, means everything," Serrano said.
She called the Jan. 9 card "The Last Walk" of her boxing career. She hopes everyone who has been part of the journey, from Puerto Rico and New York to fans watching around the world on DAZN, will be there to share it with her.
