Volkanovski Fought Evloev Sick and Refused Medication

· UFC Results

Alexander Volkanovski went into UFC 333 with the flu and chose not to take any medication, multiple sources have revealed. He still knocked out Movsar Evloev in the second round to keep his featherweight title.

The sources say Volkanovski was very sick on the morning of the fight and had been ill during fight week. He believed that taking medicine would give him an advantage over Evloev, so he took none.

Volkanovski is the current and two-time featherweight champion. At 38, he ended the unbeaten run of a younger contender.

Volkanovski described the illness at the post-fight press conference.

"It's all good, it's a part of the game. I started getting sick, I was like 'it would've been too easy if I wasn't sick.' No matter what hurdles are in front of me, this sh*t excites me."

Retirement fight idea

After beating Evloev, Volkanovski told "DC" that he plans to keep fighting and will not retire soon. He has shown interest in moving up to challenge lightweight titleholder Justin Gaethje, known as "The Highlight." A win would make him a two-division UFC champion.

He has vowed to retire after that fight, whatever the result. At the press conference he said he would give up the belt if the UFC offered him the chance, so that other contenders could fight for it.

"I don't want to hold divisions up, but I believe we could do this and not hold the divisions up. That's something I'd retire for. If they want to give me that opportunity, win or lose, I'd retire."

Dana White also likes the idea.
