WWE Books Avengers-Themed Worlds Collide for Dec. 15
WWE is tying its December trip to Disneyworld to a Marvel film. A Worlds Collide special with an "Avengers Doomsday" theme will take place on December 15, three days before the movie opens.
Gear with Avengers branding
WWE World will carry "co-branded" WWE and "Avengers" products, title belts among them. The same lineup goes on sale at WWEShop and in select Disney retail stores. No prices were given.
A fan event around the shows
WWE World is run with Fanatics at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, the same site as the wrestling shows. It comes on top of Worlds Collide and the John Cena Classic, so WWE will have three things running at the complex that weekend. WWE World sells exclusive merchandise. Fans can also get photos and autographs with certain WWE stars.
Talent and the Marvel link
WWE called the project a "landmark crossover event for Disney and WWE fans alike," built from the renowned storytelling of both companies. That wording hints at Marvel characters, but no appearances were named.
Earlier Worlds Collide shows used talent from WWE, NXT and AAA. Further details suggest this one will follow suit.
How the weekend fits together
The special sits one day after the John Cena Classic, which creator John Cena announced on "WWE Raw" is going to Disneyworld. WWE confirmed the Worlds Collide date in a Tuesday morning press release.
Our View
A film release date gives the card a fixed marketing window. WWE is borrowing the reach of a Marvel launch that is only days away.
The open points are the card and the Marvel link. Match names, and any word on whether Marvel characters appear, would show how much of the theme is on screen and how much is only branding.
