Buckley and Poirier Trade Threats Over Slur Used in Arrest

· Fighter Controversies & Social Media ·

Joaquin Buckley and Dustin Poirier have traded threats online over a racial slur Poirier used during his arrest at an Atlanta airport. Poirier is retired, and Buckley says he has one fight left.

Two messages, one reply

Buckley posted a video on Instagram aimed at Poirier. He told him not to mess with "us," then mocked Poirier's talk of being from Lafayette and having gone to school with Black people. He ended by saying that anyone with a problem, Poirier above all, should show up and do something about it.

Poirier noticed and answered in the comments: "Tryna get some views? Shut up or kill me!"

Buckley then sent a second message. He told Poirier that when they meet, they should talk about it. If Poirier would rather not talk, Buckley said, Poirier could throw the first punch, and Buckley promised to land the first hit. He also told Poirier not to put a charge on him.

What Poirier is accused of

Poirier retired at UFC 318 last year. Less than a year later he was arrested at an Atlanta airport for public intoxication. During the arrest he reportedly made threats toward the responding officer and used a racial slur.

A court appearance is scheduled in the coming months. A conviction could bring Poirier up to a year behind bars.

Where Buckley stands

Buckley, a UFC welterweight, lost to Mike Malott at UFC Edmonton. He says he will fight one more time inside the Octagon to keep a promise to his grandmother, and then retire.

Our View

This is an exchange of words, not a booked fight. Poirier is retired and has a court date ahead, and Buckley says he has one bout left. Any real meeting would depend on whether either man wants to take it beyond social media, and on what happens in Poirier's case.
